Hannelore „Loki“ Schmidt struggle eine leidenschaftliche Botanikerin. Teilgenommen hat sie dabei nicht als Kanzlergattin, sondern, wie Bundeskanzler a. D. Helmut Schmidt in seinem Grußwort betont, als Privatperson und auf eigene Kosten. Er schreibt weiter: „Ich bin Prof. Wickler dankbar dafür, dass er im vorliegenden Buch die wissenschaftliche Arbeit meiner Frau auf diesen Forschungsreisen anschaulich dokumentiert hat.“ Loki conflict von der tropischen Pflanzenwelt begeistert und ebenso wie die Verhaltensforscher beeindruckt von manchen exotischen Familienverhältnissen kleiner und großer Tiere.
Die letzte excursion mündete in eine gemeinsame offizielle Lateinamerikareise mit Helmut Schmidt, dem damaligen Bundeskanzler. Neben politischen Gesprächen spielte dabei die traditionell erfolgreiche Arbeit deutscher Archäologen mit der Entdeckung wichtiger vor-inkaischer Kulturen eine große Rolle.
Die Begeisterung für die Botanik erhielt sich Loki Schmidt zeitlebens, wie Helmut Schmidt es formuliert: „Meine Frau ist bis zuletzt eine leidenschaftliche Botanikerin geblieben und hat sich für den Schutz vom Aussterben bedrohter Pflanzen engagiert; Letzteres übrigens lange bevor dieses Thema eine breite Öffentlichkeit fand.“
