I love those poems, love how they sweep me alongside, sweep me up into the fingers of the type of longing that turns out unsayable, untranslatable, most unlikely to explain in any language, with any words—the phrases turning again into breath, as this poet says, as she creates the feel of that longing, itself, in phrases, in those sometimes-breathless strains, occasionally opposed to the restraint of shape, the candy pain of rhyme, creating that feel of urgency that’s so like wish, itself, and the experience of chance that infuses even the private excitement, particularly the private excitement. I’ve by no means learn poems that appear to me extra actual approximately love and hope and sexual relationships and their almost-inevitable shattering—darkly wonderful and expertly-crafted poems, with a white-hot lyric depth and a story pull that turns into cumulative, an erotic veering towards doom.
