There is a phenomenon known as i-dosing where certain sounds are pumped in by ear phones that has parents worried that their teens are getting high off sound. However, it is unlikely that there is really anything to worry about. Music can change your mood but it does not have the power to act like a psychedelic drug. Although the i-dosing melodies use separate tones for each ear, the brain perceives them together.

In my practice, I often recommend a type of music called brain wave massage. It is calming and you can almost feel which part of the brain it is triggering and calming. Music can help with healing. When played along with chemotherapy and radiation therapy the side effects are often decreased. Music is an excellent de-stressor and has also been effective with calming autistic children. Studies have found that music can effect brain waves, brain circulation and stress hormones.

If a teen is freaked out on music it is more likely they have taken drugs along with listening to the music. Music can move people to tears, make them happy and even calm people down. However, it is doubtful that it will freak teens out unaccompanied!
